Rick Shelton, 1949-2008

Richard (Rick) Alan Shelton, age 58, passed away on April 9, 2008 in Grey Forest, Texas.

Rick was a devoted father and loyal friend who was passionate about life in every way. Of Irish descent, he lived according to Yeats' maxim--for Rick, there were no strangers, only friends he hadn't met. He shared the best parts of himself with each friend who came into his life.

A gifted athlete, Rick transitioned from being one of the best age group middle distance runners in Texas (he ran a 4:09 mile in his 38th year) to riding his bicycle through the scenic hill country where he lived. A consummate competitor, Rick would pit himself against any rider, often overtaking much younger cyclists. Many of those who Rick passed became his friends.

Rick will be remembered, whether at work, in sport, or elsewhere, as fun, caring, passionate, friendly and enthusiastic. Some people have the gift of gab; Rick was the world champion. Memories of Rick's witty and insightful monologues will be treasured by those who knew him.  Rick was a generous man, giving freely of his time, talent and treasure.

Above all, Rick was a loving and dedicated father to his son, Michael, and daughter, Elle. Nothing gave him greater joy than his children, who were the center of his life. The walls of his home are covered with candid photos--most taken by Rick--of Michael and Elle from the time they were born to the present. Rick lived for his children, and will live on in them.

He is survived by his two children Michael Munroe Shelton, San Antonio, Texas and Elizabeth Megan Shelton, Grey Forest, Texas.

An informal Memorial Service will be held at Roger Soler's Sports in Helotes on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at 10 am. Following a brief remembrance, some of Rick's cycling friends will ride up Toutant Beauregard to spread his ashes over one of his favorite hill climbs.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program via RicksRide.org.
