Hunting With Rick
(From Larry Hill)
I have known Rick for over 2/3 of a sixty year span and as a much younger man, he was just as spontaneous as all of you remember as well. Shortly after I met Rick at San Antonio College in 1968, he found out that I liked to hunt, so he invited me out to his "Grannies" farm on O'Conner Rd, in NE San Antonio. He said Granny had an oat patch that held a large herd of deer every evening and since I owned a rifle and he did not, if I would come and harvest one of Grannies deer, he would split the venison with me.
The adventure began with us concealing ourselves along the fence that surrounded the oats and before too long, some deer did appear inside the field. He told me to take one and I did just that. He let out a bellar and yelled that we would eat well tonight. It was also then that he looked at me and said we needed to get the deer out after dark, because the oat patch didn't really belong to his Granny, but to some distant Uncle that did not allow any hunting. We did get the deer, but not before being confronted by his Uncle.
All my memories of Rick are ones to cherish and most of our younger escapades (some legal) always contained excitement, even sometimes on the ragged edge. He could tell a story like nobody else. Sometimes one had to doubt parts of his stories, but then again those with doubts didn't know him very well.
As soon as we all realize he is really gone, there will be a big gap in all of our lives. As for now, I am still expecting his call.
