7 July 2008: Stage Three: The Importance of Food
Food has never been so important.
I'm glad to be in the company of an ironman triathlete who can
sympathize with a dinner menu that looks something like this:
- four crepes,
- camembert cheese (the whole thing),
- a bar of dark chocolate (the whole thing),
- four raw eggs,
- three slices of ham,
- a baguette (the whole thing),
- a bag of almonds,
- a slice of chocolate cake,
- a slice of flan,
- a tin of mackerel,
- ten chocolate-covered cookies,
- a bottle of yogurt,
- four slices of heavily buttered bread
...and those are just the things I remember.
Needless to say, I woke up hungry this morning. Not a good thing when
you have 208K in front of you. At least they promised to be flat. But
you know what they say about promises--they're like French road signs in
that they sometimes point in the wrong direction. Got lost for an hour,
crossed and recrossed the same highway twice in the dark before finding
another of the neon green arrows that I have come to love. OK, I
thought, I can still do this.
