19 July 2008: Stage Thirteen: Need New Knees
Another day, another 200 km. Met
georgethecyclist.blogspot.com, a guy from Chicago following the Tour
for the fourth time, and we rode the last 80 km or so of the stage
together. Then CJ pulled me through the first 65 km of tomorrow's stage.
The conversation helped take the focus off of my knees, which by now are
probably giant masses of scar tissue--each pedal stroke, especially in
the morning, feels like ripping a large scab off. I think I'll just keep
going until A) I can't walk, B) I find a second-hand handcycle, or C) I
wake up and find myself suddenly sane. Or D) I actually finish.
The mountains are looming large. Tomorrow's target: the summit of the
Col de Angel.
