24 June, 2008: Broken Derailleurs and Stinky Cheese

Less than two weeks to go. Time to start counting:

Baguettes: 6
Smelly French cheeses (YUM!): 4
Bottles of wine: 3
Bent Derailleurs (thank you Air France): 1
Paris bike shops visited: 3
Vehicles drafted through the streets of Paris: 23
Previews of the finish line: 1

Have to say, the latter gave me goosebumps. Cruising down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées behind a convertible with a newlywed couple in the backseat, getting yelled at by a helpful Frenchman -- "pas velo!" -- riding around the Arc de Triomphe, teeth rattling with cobblestone vibrations -- the only thought in my mind (besides "Look Ma, there's the Eiffel Tower!") is: "Will I be here again in 34 days?"

Je crois c'est possible!
